At 36 years old, life wasn’t where I wanted it to be.
Like so many people, I found myself caught in the cycle of modern life. Long hours at work, constant pressure, never truly switching off, and spending more time looking at screens than looking at the world around me. My work-life balance disappeared, and with it came the first real struggle with my mental health.
I knew something had to change.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the Viking Age. Not because of the myths or the battles, but because of the way people lived. They built things with their hands. They gathered around a fire instead of a television. They worked with nature rather than against it. Life was simpler, slower, and connected to something real.
So I started spending more time outdoors.
I went hiking. I learned to light fires. I cooked over open flames. I sat alone in the woods with no notifications, no deadlines and no endless scrolling. For the first time in a long time, I found peace in the quiet.
Something unexpected happened.
The more time I spent away from modern life, the more I felt like I was finding myself again.
I realised how much we have lost as a society. We have thousands of online friends, yet so few real communities. We consume more than we create. We spend our evenings looking down at phones instead of looking into a fire surrounded by people we care about.
I started looking for somewhere that already existed. A place where people could spend a weekend living simply, learning traditional skills, cooking over an open fire and meeting others who shared the same interests in bushcraft, history and the outdoors.
I couldn’t find it.
Then one evening, sitting beside a fire in the woods, a single thought crossed my mind.
What if I built it?
That simple question became Járnheim.
What began as an idea quickly became an obsession. I taught myself woodworking, started making Viking furniture by hand, learned traditional sewing techniques, built camp equipment, crafted shields and began gathering everything needed to create an authentic Viking encampment. After countless conversations, setbacks and long days of hard work, I finally secured a permanent woodland where that vision could begin to take shape.
But Járnheim was never really about Vikings.
The Vikings were simply the inspiration.
Járnheim is about reconnecting with nature, with practical skills, with history and, most importantly, with other people. It’s about creating a place where strangers become friends around a campfire, where children discover a world beyond tablets and televisions, and where adults remember what it feels like to slow down, create something with their hands and simply be present.
Every stool we’ve built, every shield we’ve crafted, every tree we’ve cleared and every post we’ve driven into the ground brings us one step closer to that vision.
This isn’t just the story of building a Viking village.
It’s the story of building a community.
And this is only the beginning.
